Remember how, especially when you were a kid, someone would come up with a "great idea?" Only, when you thought about it, it was the dumbest idea you had ever heard. That's how I felt when I heard that Donald Trump wants to reopen Alcatraz as a prison. We just took the tour in March. The tour is pretty cool, but trying to fix that place up would be ridiculous. It is one of the most visited national park sites in the United States. In order to make it a prison again, the entirety of it would need to be bulldozed over and rebuilt.

Once there was a company called Sears. You could use a book, or "catalog" Sears published to select items to purchase. Then you could mail your order with a check or money order to Sears, and your package would be delivered to your house. Eventually, Sears relied on (brick and mortar) stores that people came to, to buy things. Then when everyone was shopping on the Internet, a company called Amazon had items for sale on their website. Customers could select what they wanted to buy and pay with a credit card. Then the package would be delivered to their house. This new idea for selling things eventually put Sears out of business...

The current trend is to blame systemic racism for inequality, and cancel culture has stopped the exploration into other possible factors; and so, solutions. Some questions I have are what are the reasons that some African-Americans have succeeded while others haven't? Second, of the growing number of black homeowners in my neighborhood, many seem to be recent immigrants from Africa. Why are they able to succeed? Answering the systemic differences between success and not may offer real solutions. Simply looking at obvious, surface issues without further exploration is inconsistent with scientific study. If a patient told her doctor she had foot pain and the doctor simply prescribed pain medication without further study, the results could be disastrous. If the pain was caused by diabetes, introducing more medication for the body to process could make the original disease worse. Yet, this is how cancel culture diagnoses social illness.
