Earth Day 2025

Due to the fascist idiots in power, caring for the environment is more important than ever.

Political Dynamics of Climate Change

There has been a lot of talk about climate change recently—and rightly so. A young lady from Sweden by the name of Greta Thunberg , has brought the fight to the world leaders. She is quite right, that we need to be careful of what we do to the environment. I remember when I was a child, there were no hawks or eagles around my local area—because of the widespread use of DDT . Now after being banned in 1972, I see hawks daily and eagles weekly. But there are still climate change doubters . Even if the science shows the impact, some will always deny it. Part of this is due to how the World Economy plays into the politics. This is often frustrating for the activists; who usually don't want to think about this part of the issue—because they believe their point-of-view is of a higher importance. Perhaps it is, but when I visited the the climate protest at the Minnesota State Capitol , the first few speakers were more focused on racial inequality than they were on climate change. I was...

SPRUCE Project

We were lucky enough to be given a tour of the SPRUCE Project in the Chippewa National Forest, North of Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Our tour guide was W. Robert Nettles IV, SPRUCE Project Operations Manager at Oak Ridge National Laboratory . I went into the site fueled primarily by my lifetime of interest in the natural environment; as well as my interest from volunteering as a park ranger in the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. However, by the time I was done, my interest in technology, from over 10 years as an IT professional, was thoroughly peaked! Definitely off the "beaten path," in a spruce bog in Northern Minnesota, this site boasts an incredible array of scientific equipment that is supported by an amazing technological infrastructure! There are control sites and some of the chambers have added heat, carbon dioxide, or both. A lot of equipment and experimental testing goes on 24/7, 365 days per year. These guys know their stuff. The 10 chambers are connected ...

I Disagree with Trump on Paris Climate Pact

Dear People of Planet Earth, As an American citizen, I would like to go on record that I disagree with President Donald Trump's decision to quit the Paris Climate Agreement . He did this without my approval. In fact, it appears to have been done without the approval of most American citizens. This is shameful in so many ways in a country that is supposed to be governed of the people, by the people. Sincerely, Kevin J. Curtis Environmental Advocate and United States Citizen

Irony of Saving the Environment

The irony of the Dakota Pipeline Protest , is that it has created an environmental disaster in the process. The protesters have left behind enormous piles of garbage . When the original idea was to "save the environment," it seems that this mountain of trash is jeopardizing the environment instead. Fracking can become an environmental hazard when it allows "brine" to escape into waterways—but economic gains are often placed ahead of the environmental risks. Transporting oil by rail is dangerous, and pipelines have issues too. So while the battle goes on, the protesters have created an environmental disaster in the process. Looking in from the outside, it all seems so insane. There has to be a better way to handle these disputes.
