Trying On New Ears

When you shave your head, you can't very well change your hair color. But you can, however, change your ear color!

True Equality?

Is it a confusing message for our children, when we teach them that race should not be how we judge people, or select them for jobs, and how we should instead look at character and merit, and no one should be excluded due to gender or skin color--when President Biden is looking exclusively for a black woman to be the next Supreme Court Justice? Because I understand why it's being done, but it still seems to undermine the true idea behind real equality; and hiring the best person for the job, regardless of race, gender or religious affiliation.

Keep Trying

There is a tendency in our society to assess blame. Blame the government, blame the schools, blame law enforcement, blame the legal system. While there is likely plenty of blame to go around, it doesn’t seem to be creating much positive change. If we look at how problems were handled in a historical context, it often came with a certain amount of personal sacrifice. People were tough and determined. They did what needed to be done—even at the risk of personal discomfort.

Today, I notice the tone is different. Everything is about “my rights, my choice… me, I, myself.” People aren’t concerned if anything is left for their neighbor. They don’t want to make changes in themselves. They want to change others instead. Most people don’t want to take responsibility for themselves or their own actions.

We can’t just give-up, because there are adverse conditions. We can’t stop trying, because someone told us that life isn’t fair. We can’t avoid responsibility by demanding others make all the changes—because in the end, we can only change ourselves. One by one, we can make the choices necessary to save the planet, make things equitable for everyone, and lookout for our neighbors as well as our families.

Who's Watching Bugs Bunny?

It's pretty cool that my 10 year old son likes to watch the same cartoons that I did. But, there is a definite difference in the commercials. I seem to remember a lot of cereal commercials with prizes inside when I was growing up. Now, the commercials are about prescription drugs to prolong your life with less pain. Also popular are insurance commercials. I guess that probably means there are more people my age watching Looney Tunes these days, than there are my son's age...

One year ago, an attempt was made to violently overthrow the U.S. government to install a dictatorship. Whether you like the winner or not, you do get to vote. We almost lost that right last year.
