Another Dead Baby and Still No Protest!

Another child died--that makes 3 in 3 weeks in the Twin Cities—killed by her mother this time. She was drowned in the bathtub. All were African-Americans and nobody is protesting because no cops (white cops in particular) were involved.

I'm still waiting for the protest.

Best Thing About Facebook

I think that the best thing about Facebook is that you can see how boring and shallow most people are. If you knew someone in the past, you can look up their Facebook page. Some people keep it "private" and other people make everything public so the world knows how "great" they are. I like the men who publicize their hunting kills and riding their Harley and all that good "manly" stuff! Then there are the women who post pictures of themselves in bikinis or maybe they show everyone where they traveled and that they studied some other culture. The bottom-line, is, that if someone was self-absorbed and shallow years ago when you knew them, they probably still are—and Facebook gives them a great outlet. Even better, is Twitter! I mean when you can tell the world that you just now ate a piece of toast or used the bathroom, how "great" is that?

High Class!

I’ve spent some time over the last few years, working in a very high class building. For the entire 3 years I’ve spent time there, the toilet paper in the bathroom has been held in place by a rubber band. Yesterday the rubber band was broken and on the floor. I’m not sure what kept the toilet paper from falling out of the holder; but I was sure a new rubber band would be coming soon. But, alas, the rubber band was simply repaired; and now the toilet paper is secure once again!

In an effort to "seek justice," protesters organized by Black Lives Matter, defied Mall of America policy against demonstrations (on private property). After stopping business on one of the busiest shopping days of the year; and defying the clearly stated and repeated policy, the group seems to think that they have furthered their cause. This group also recently blocked traffic on I35W; showing little regard for public safety or for stopping people needing to travel.

When actor Mickey Rourke defeated Godzilla in a boxing match recently, speculation was that the fight was fixed. Now Godzilla has admitted that he threw the fight for $15K and was not allowed to breathe fire during the staging. Godzilla has spoken out, allegedly because Rourke tried to "stiff him" out of $5K that was to be paid after returning to the U.S. 62-year-old Mickey Rourke was unavailable for comment.

After the announcement that Sony cancelled the premier of the movie "The Interview," sources say that CuTRis has now hacked into Sony and reset the movie premier of "The Interview" for December 25th as originally planned! In a candid remark, CuTRis has indicated that he was initially unable to hack into Sony Pictures, but found that he could hack into North Korea, and from there he had easy access to Sony. CuTRis, who has his own (low budget) movie about Kim Jong-Un called, "Kim Jong Un is Dumb," also reportedly may have made fun of Kim Jong-Un before; once or fifteen times. At this time it is unknown if Sony will again succumb to the threats and re-unschedule the movie that CuTRis has apparently rescheduled.

Nice Guy That Air Force Dude!

Yesterday I decided to pickup a sandwich from Subway before going to band. When I got to the Subway store, I walked up to the door at the same time as did this young man dressed in U.S. Air Force attire. He reached out and opened the door for me. Once inside, I motioned for him to go ahead of me in line. We both ordered and as he was paying, he told the cashier that he was buying my sandwich too. I protested that he didn't have to do that and I could pay for my own. He insisted and the cashier took his money for both orders. I told him that I appreciated the gesture and he said that he appreciated me letting him go first in line. All I could think is that this was a really nice guy. Maybe there is hope for the future with a few young people like this in the world.

This story looks a lot like the story from last week when another baby was killed by his father.

Can we blame this on racism too? How about a protest? Come on just a small one for another dead child.

Poor parenting and bad attitudes results in lack of education, lack of respect, lack of morals, lack of direction, employment.... should I go on? Maybe you just want to go protest against the police instead?

Rebuilt Kirby $129.95

In about 1998, my friend Pete (who is the drummer in our band) had a seizure while driving and had a bad accident. He was in the hospital and then laid up in a nursing home for a long time after. I went to visit him regularly and eventually, he was able to leave and walk out on his own—with the aid of some crutches.

Now about this time, I happened to notice a sign outside of a vacuum store in Richfield; that advertised a rebuilt Kirby for $129.95. With Pete’s last name being Kirby, I had this idea…

So after Pete was out in the world again, while he was riding with me in my car, I pulled over and told him to stand under that sign. Then I snapped this picture with my old 35MM camera. Eventually Dave scanned the picture and I found it in the folder called, “Kevin” on his computer. So, here is the classic “Rebuilt Kirby” photo!

Taliban Cowards Kill Children

Apparently some tough guys from the Taliban slaughtered a bunch of defenseless children yesterday at a school in Pakistan.

"Their god" should be very pleased with their cowardly and murderous actions.

Regardless of who you are, where you are or what you are, the world should unite and pursue and destroy the Taliban and ISIS.

They have no god. They make up their own warped rules and pretend it is for god. They have contaminated Islam and the world.

Most of the time, doctors don't really know what's going on when something happens to you. They get together and talk over some possibilities; and then they charge a lot for not knowing. Me and my friend Dave both had a parent in the hospital recently after something unexpected and somewhat scary happened. In both cases, the doctors found nothing. What I mean is, they had no idea what happened or why it happened.

Here is an imaginary "consult" me and Dave had during band practice.

Child Killer Arrested

A couple of days ago I was really upset to hear about this piece of crap who beat his 1-year-old son to death. If there is any good news, it's that the piece of crap was arrested yesterday.

Like I said the other day, I want to know who is going to protest about a grown man killing a baby? Because I know damn well, if any white cop had shot this guy while he resisted arrest, thousands would be marching in protest!

Here is something for all of you "so enlightened" people to march about.

Why are certain groups unable to elevate themselves when others do it every day? My wife came from an immigrant family, she is not white and grew up poor. She also has a BA in Fine Arts and a Master's degree in Education. My late friend Wendell, who was African-American, called the lack of values and priorities "slave mentality." He correctly realized that blaming everyone else for your problems was never going to fix them. I think we have seen that my friend was right. In order to make things better for everyone, a shift in attitude is going to be needed. Families need fathers who will support and be there for their children. Children don't need fathers who are absent or who show up to beat them. Mothers need to put their children's needs ahead of their own and ahead of men who choose crime and violence over family life. Strong families are necessary in order to grow responsible children. Education needs to be made a priority. Doing good should get you praise—and not taunts of being a "sellout," or "not black enough." Strong families help their children grow into good people. Strong families intervene when children choose crime and drugs. If believing these things makes me a racist then call me what you want. My child is biracial and I could not love him more.

I saw the pictures on the news of the now deceased 1-year-old baby. If this guy didn't want him, I would have taken him to be my son. I'm sure someone would have been mad about that—as I would have been "raising him white;" which apparently means having a dad who makes sure he gets an education and stays out of gangs. Yeah, that would have been awful wouldn't it have been?

Go and protest now all of you! Make sure to ensure the rights of those who break the law and resist arrest. Pull out the "race card", because white people would rather be labeled axe murderers than be called a racist! All of you should be really proud! Go protest and burn some stuff and never mind crying about that dead child. No, leave that for me. Because it is incredibly sad that a man would beat his baby son to death. What kind of world are we creating for the children? Does anyone care? Is your "agenda" more important than our kids?

Email Not Working

In fact, the IT department sent us an email about the email not working.
I was unable to open it because of the email not working and all.
Then the email worked for 12 ½ seconds and the email finally opened and I could read it!
By the time I had read the email, the email had stopped working again but at least I had the email about the email now.

Vladimir Putin has responded to the news that he was not chosen as TIME Magazine's "Person of the Year," by releasing a new photo of himself—promoting his tough guy image. This time Putin kept his shirt on as he is shown "working as security" at a Moscow Motorcycle Rally. Later, sources from Russia claim that he won a motorcycle race and then used his own body to stop a motorcycle from running over a baby that had crawled onto the track. No one; including Putin, was injured due to his heroic efforts.

Cause of Reptile Screensaver Malfunction

For weeks I had this cool screensaver. It had a bunch of different kinds of reptiles that would dart back and forth across the screen! Sometimes it was the fast ones. Sometimes a slow turtle might walk by. Other times it would be a snake slithering across the screen. It was a pretty great screen saver!

How to Avoid being Shot by Police - Tutorial

Note* This tutorial will help you to avoid getting shot by police. It should work with any color police officers—even white cops. In addition, though we only hear reports about white cops shooting black people, this is not the only racial combination that exists. In addition, black men shoot other black men at a rate far greater than police do. In fact, black men shoot innocent bystanders too—though this rarely seems to get a lot of protesters to come out because it isn't racially charged enough.

Part One: Do not become involved in illegal activity. It is a fairly safe bet, that if you are not stealing, threatening, burglarizing, loitering, selling illegally, trespassing, or engaged in other criminal activity, the likelihood of you being stopped by police is significantly lower than if you are participating in such activities.

Part Two: If confronted by police officers, do not resist. Do not engage them in hostile or disrespectful dialogue (that means talking). Do not shout. Do not swear. Do not reach into your pockets, coat or pants for something. Keep your hands visible and be as cooperative and non-threatening as possible. If someone told you to be belligerent (that means nasty and uncooperative) to police—even if it was your mom, your half-brother or the guy who used to live in your apartment, this is bad advice. Telling you such a thing or believing such a thing is stupid and might get you killed or into more trouble than if you cooperate.

Your race, be it black, white or green with red polka dots, does not exclude you from obeying the law. While working at a Jr. High School in the south metro, I had students tell me that "Nobody can make me do anything I don't want to do!" This is false. After pointing it out to a student of color, that judges and police officers can make any of us do things that we may not want to do, the student turned it into a commentary about his race—and administration cowered and told me I couldn't tell students that anymore. The police liaison officer at that school told me that "more students should be told that."

After living through working in Hennepin County and seeing my African-American coworkers misbehave (including one who was dealing drugs while working as a drug counselor) and then levy bogus lawsuits; that had to be taken seriously because of the misperceptions of how such things should be handled, I am looking at the "black men dying at the hands of white police" rather objectively. I have yet to see any video evidence, etc., showing a victim who was fully cooperative, who was killed. In fact, each incident shows a person who is actively resisting officers—generally after being stopped for doing something illegal. The "good person" being killed by a "bad cop" story is being so frequently misused, that it surely should start losing credibility at some point—even among whites who are terrified of being called racists.

Finally, being a successful black person does not mean you "aren't black enough." At that same Jr. High School, I remember one African-American kid who was polite and did well in school. Other black kids didn't like him and he was fully accepted by the white kids; with whom he hung around with. The real issue here is that the truth is really not being considered in this argument at all. Some people see this as a power-play, and they are capitalizing on it. Others are intimidated that they might be seen as, gulp... racists. So no one is dealing truthfully and as a result, things will not get any better.

So try following the simple guidelines in this tutorial, and you should avoid being killed by police. Thanks.

White cops should never go into black neighborhoods. 911 callers should identify their race before police are sent. If the caller is black, only black cops should respond. If no black cops are available, no police should respond. If the parties involved are of multiple races, an equal proportion of like-race police officers must be assembled before responding to the call for help. While responding, officers will only be allowed to interact with or arrest people who are of the same race as they are. This and only this will keep us all safe from white cops and ensure the safety of blacks.

Scars

Anyone who has been on this Earth for a while, will suffer some injuries. Sometimes the scar is visible and often it is not. We have all suffered from emotional trauma of one kind or another—and these scars often end up on the inside where they can't always be seen. But they are there with us every day and every night. Hopefully, these scars teach us things about ourselves and about other people. Hopefully, these scars make us stronger. Sometimes, these scars can even make us more interesting and maybe even more beautiful.

This tree bears it's scars both internally and externally—much the way many of us do. This tree is more interesting than most—because the barbed wire from some bygone day and some bygone farm, has been imbedded inside its trunk as it grew and lived. We cannot remove the wire without damaging the tree. The two parts are now one. This is how scars are. We get them and then we continue on with life. We cannot be separated from that leftover trauma without causing even more damage. The scar will be with us for as long as we are here.

The Seventh Fairy

Alex accidentally shot a fairy. He blasted it with a 12-gauge shotgun. It was an honest mistake; the fairy was hanging out in a corn field and flew up when the labrador flushed it out. Damn! It was the seventh fairy he'd accidentally shot this week! He was hoping to get a pheasant. Fairies didn't even taste good—and the last thing he needed was another taxidermied fairy! He reached down and picked up the fairy. Stupid thing... he didn't really want anyone to find out that he had shot another fairy out of season. Finally, he shoved it down a badger hole and kicked dirt over it. Then he walked quickly away.

Dear Lord, please protect us from our families this holiday season. As we find ourselves thrust into the company of extended relations, with people who we are related to by marriage—and sometimes less than that, we ask your guidance as the Lucy Van Pelt's of the family start slinging their tidings of nastiness to and fro. All Eyes on Ferguson

All eyes are on Ferguson now as it literally smokes this morning after burning all night. Is it a racist place? Maybe it is. But in the midst of the looting, shooting and destruction, could it be that some of the views might be justified? Who is doing the looting, shooting and burning? Are these the same people who are "crying foul?" Are the people committing the violence and crimes the same people who are seeking "justice?" Does anyone remember the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr.? This stuff is all connected and all related people. If you want to live in a cesspool, then you are doing the right thing. If you want justice, then you are doing exactly the wrong thing in order to get it. If you are self-serving, and using this tragedy as a "justification" for your own criminal tendencies, then you are truly the source of the problem.

I hadn’t realized before you set me straight, that it was my responsibility to take care of your kids for you while you went out to do fun things. I thought such things were voluntary. I didn’t realize that it was a mandatory obligation on my part. Knowing that now, I can see why you were so persistent to make me give up my weekends, to watch your children. I understand now why you think I am negative. I’m deeply sorry that you feel this way. I can see now that you feel entitled to babysitting services and so much more. It was wrong of me to want to have my weekends for my family and our stuff—when I could have been taking care of your stuff instead.

I also want to thank you for the comments about how I should follow your culture. I understand why you don’t follow your culture yourself; because the rules aren’t for you; they are for me—even though I am from a different culture. Maybe if you decide to follow the rules yourself and take care of your own kids and your own stuff, you will be kind enough to give me some more good advice in the future. I sure do look forward to that.

The Office Space...

His office was located in a building that was decorated in 20th Century Cheap. At one point he had a mouse go into his desk and chew into a bag with three candy bars and eat (only) the TWIX®. He set a mouse trap the next day. Unfortunately the ants showed up to eat all the bait before the mouse could get it. Since I recently had a Hmong guy make derogatory remarks to me, about me, because I didn't BUY my Hmong wife as demanded by Hmong culture, I will go on record as saying I did not buy my wife. I refused. I believe out of all the strange practices of this culture, selling your daughter for profit is perhaps the one I find most despicable. Aside from turning what should be love into a financial transaction, it also devalues women and makes them a commodity to be bought and sold like livestock. For the record, my wife bought herself. I would have simply refused, but she handed over the money in cash. We were two adults with our own homes and lives and I, personally, saw no reason to pay; but she did. I can only hope the following generations will free their children from the bonds of these practices. Incidentally, the man who made the comments found a way out of paying too. He refused to marry the woman. Instead they live together and have children together. No marriage and no payment.

Adrian Peterson Plea Deal

Details of the Adrian Peterson plea deal were revealed yesterday and the penalties are stiff! Adrian will avoid any jail time, but he will have to pay a $4000 fine! Since he has been paid $700,000 per week while not even having to play football, the fine is like if a "normal" person was fined 4 cents. Second, Peterson must perform 80 hours of community service! This horrible experience will likely include smiling, holding a football, and maybe even signing some autographs and maybe talking to some kids. It is really too awful to think about. Why not just send him to the chain gang? For his part, Adrian said he accepts responsibility and he loves his son—who he beat with a stick until he bled. Adrian also said that he loves the two more children (that he fathered) who were born during the court proceedings from three different mothers. One of them, according to inside sources, is a high class stripper in Houston. Both the NFL and the Minnesota Vikings are no doubt, eager to get Adrian Peterson back on the football field. The challenge for them, will be to make it look like they care about what is right—and so they may need to come up with equally grueling penalties for the star running back; such as making him pay a fine of a couple thousand (i.e. 2 cents equivalent for normal people) dollars and making him drink "regular" flavored Gatorade for at least three games. Likely Adrian will accept these severe penalties and continue to collect his normal salary—which is larger than the gross national product for 379 countries. Hopefully this will finally satisfy the blood-thirsty public which will hopefully satisfy the advertisers—so that they will continue to pump money into the National Football league. In the end, hasn't Adrian suffered enough?

Deer Fall Crash

This morning, when it was still dark, I was driving with my son a short distance from home when I noticed a car with its hazard lights on in the middle of the road. I thought perhaps it was stalled or otherwise disabled; so I switched lanes to go around it. As I did, I noticed a second car in the opposite lane pulled over and then I wondered if the two had some sort of accident. Then as I went through the intersection, I saw a large, my guess is 10-point White-tailed buck as it was slowly walking toward my car! Just then the big animal fell straight down on the road. That was when I noticed the glass in the road as I drove on past. It was a bad morning for the person (or people) in the car that hit this animal and a worse morning for the deer who was now either dead or dying.

Vikings: Key to Winning is Not Sucking

Of course playing on the road against a good team and winning would be a real test; but it seems that the Minnesota Vikings have begun to try a new strategy; that of not sucking as much. If they can keep this up, they could continue to win football games.

No More Office Air

To save money, air will no longer be supplied at the office. Employees who want air, should bring their own air from home. Telecommuting is not an option; as we need employees at their desks in order to maximize discomfort. Rumors of the restrooms being closed are untrue. We are still discussing whether this is a viable option.

CuTRis to Protest at Vikings/Redskins Game

CuTRis has said he will join all the other people protesting at the Vikings vs. Redskins game on Sunday in Minneapolis. People are outraged that a team would have such a politically incorrect name. CuTRis has said that he is upset that the Vikings would use a group of people (i.e. the Vikings) as their mascot. Being one-quarter Norwegian, CuTRis said his ancestry is not a mascot and he wants a more politically correct name, such as "Team that Sucks at Football."

When asked how he feels about the Redskins name, CuTRis said, "It is probably time to change that name too. I mean if it was the "Blackskins," it would already have been mandated (to change) by the legal system as a "hate crime." If the name was the "Whiteskins," everybody would be like, 'that's a really dumb name!' It is interesting that the (football team at the) nation's capital would have such a politically incorrect name."

Why is Kmart Closing?

I went to the Burnsville Kmart recently. I literally had only minutes before I had to go to a meeting, but since the store is closing I wanted to see if I could get a deal on shoes; and boots for my son. I found both and all for 30% off.

When I got home that night, I knew the boots would be big on him, but when I looked at the two child’s boots that were tied together with a cord and had a cardboard tag with the size, I noticed that one boot was bigger. In fact, one was a size larger! They had sold me two different size boots and gave me a receipt that said, "no exchanges and no refunds" (because the Burnsville store is closing).

I was pretty upset so I contacted Kmart Corporate customer service online—and of course, they didn’t get back to me (very quickly).

So the next day, I went to the Kmart in St. Paul (because it is closer for me); and waited in line at customer service. And waited... Between the “competent” staff and the questionable customers, it was not good. I finally got to the front of the line and the first clerk said, "It’s from Burnsville," in the kiss of death voice. She showed the receipt to the other clerk (who seemed more senior) and said again, "look, it's from Burnsville."

I showed the new clerk the two attached boots and the two sizes. Then she asked, "What you want to do just get two the same?" I said, "Yes." "Run on back and see if we have some," she said. So I found a pair of matching boots and she let me switch them.

Then, five days later I got an email from a Kmart Corporate customer service representative. She copied the entire return policy that is on the back of a receipt (from a non-closing Kmart store) and sent it to me. I replied that this was no help at all.

Another day or two passed, and I received an email from an “email adviser” from “Kmart Help.” He told me that I can’t return the boots because they came from a “liquidated store.” I replied to him that he sucks and selling mismatched merchandise as a set to trick customers into buying is a bad policy and it might be one (of many) reason(s) the Kmart stores are continuing to close.

Update 10/31/2014: Received a phone message telling me to check email regarding this issue. Email apologized and offered a coupon for $5 off a purchase of $25 or more. I replied back as to where she could put the coupon...

Since ISIS likes to point a hundred cell phones at the atrocities they commit (murder, torture) so they can broadcast it on social media, I say we should bomb the cell towers and Internet infrastructure in their location(s). Nice Weather = Panhandlers With Small Backpacks

The nice weather we have been having each afternoon, seems to have brought out the panhandlers. Having worked at one time in social services, I have developed my own opinion on panhandlers. I don't think most of them are legitimate. They hold up cardboard signs proclaiming that they are homeless, out-of-work, stranded, or whatever. Often there is some biblical reference as well such as, "God Bless." A woman panhandler recently had a sign that said she was a homeless single mother; but there were no children with her. Were they at daycare? The men usually have beards. Not like the homeless guy I see on Rice Street—who tends to have a long, unkempt beard, but rather a beard you might see on regular guy who has a beard. In addition to the flannel shirts, etc., they all seem to have, sitting close by, a backpack. The issue I have, is that most elementary school students carry a backpack that is at least as big as the backpacks I saw the other day—which seemed awfully small for a homeless person; many of whom carry all of their worldly possessions with them. How much food, clothing and necessities can one carry in a tiny, child's backpack? Some people will give money to these beggars just in case they are really in need. I don't tend to believe that the "fair weather beggars" who swarm—one per highway ramp during rush hour are really anything more than opportunists who would rather beg for money than earn it. Of course it is possible that the cigarette and bottle of water they have, had been given to them by the previous motorist who went by; but personally I doubt that most of them are really in need.

The Scariest Bug Yet!

Elsewhere in this blog I have commented on the distribution of power in my marriage regarding bugs. Well such an occasion occurred just the other day. Being away, I received a message from my wife that she had killed the scariest bug yet. I also received instructions that the deceased was still on the kitchen floor and I was to remove it as soon as I arrived on the premises. My imagination ran wild with this news and I immediately replied to my wife's message asking if she had had to use the plastic sword to dispatch this hideous insect. Then it really hit me. Just how large and creepy was this bug? Indeed my wife had said she killed the intruder—yet if it wasn't dead, I was going to walk right into the mandibles of a six foot tall, hideously wounded insect! As I said, my imagination was running wild... Well as fate would have it, I survived the ordeal. As I carried in several bags of groceries upon getting home, I figured I had a good chance of survival since the $53 worth of food should keep an insect busy for at least a few seconds—hopefully allowing me enough time to run to the closet and get the plastic sword! As I entered the kitchen I saw... nothing. There was absolutely nothing! And by nothing, I am not saying that there weren’t the usual furnishings of a modern American kitchen—because indeed there was. But in the middle of the floor where my wife warned me I would find the gruesome carnage, there was nothing. I carefully put my grocery bags down to examine the crime scene. Then, I saw it! The small and withered remains of a centipede! Obviously though the hours had taken its toll, this small bit of exoskeleton had once been a large and amazingly fast intruder! I was at once in awe of my wife's bravery. She had aimed her shoe with all the destructive power of an RPG and left her adversary utterly annihilated! I reached for a scrap of paper towel and wiped up the residue. I carefully placed the corpse into the wastebasket in the garage so my wife would be satisfied the dead villain was out of the house. Then I went back inside and unpacked my groceries.

An Old Beer

Not having brewed for some time… for lack of some time, I have been rather conservative with my back stock of homemade beer. None-the-less, I indulged in one of my "Baby’s First Lager" beers during a lasagna dinner yesterday. I was rather happy with the look, taste and carbonation of this lager that had "been in the tank" for 363 days before it was bottled. I’m quite sure I did “everything wrong,” by hauling it to three different cities as we moved twice before landing in our new house. Likely the experts would tell me it tastes awful by now! Yet I thoroughly enjoyed it; cretin that I am...

We visited The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, Wisconsin late last week. It is a great place to explore. There are exhibits (including a simulated dynamite explosion in a copper mine), an observation deck, trails, movies and more! This place is free and very child friendly. My son liked it a lot and so did I.

Vikings Receive Unfair Criticism

I've been hearing a lot of unfair criticism about the Minnesota Vikings. People are always judging them based on their football playing ability! Sure, if you judge them on that, I agree that they suck. But why doesn't anyone ever judge them on something they are good at? Like for instance, getting arrested. They lead the NFL at that! No one ever says, "Wow! The Vikings sure are good at needlepoint! Now I don't know if they are good at it, but that is the point! Nobody even talks about anything except football! It's football this and football that! OK fine! They can't play football. I don't recall that they ever could! They've gone through countless players and coaches and they still suck. So stop with the criticism everybody! It's not always about football you know! These guys get paid a lot of money to suck! That should mean something! I mean the taxpayers are even buying them a brand new stadium to suck at! And you all can sit there and criticize them! You ought to be ashamed!

How to Make Bad Data & Waste My Time

Keep sending the wrong file and by the way, keep opening and saving it in Excel so the numbers get corrupted. Then I can start working on it and realize I can’t get accurate data from it and so stop and ask for new files which will likely be bad too. Then make sure to deny you opened it in Excel. Then later, tell me you can’t open tab files on your computer so I can tell you to stop opening the files and just send them to me the way the vendor intended them to be. Then send me nine more emails with the last one being “when will it be ready?” Because if I get a lot of “are we there yet?” emails, it always SPEEDS up the process because answering garbage is a good use of my time. Oh yeah, then tell me something can’t be seen in the database that doesn’t actually exist—so that I can wade back through the data to tell you something you should already know about your own data. Then make sure to put the ID numbers in the wrong column in your system and then tell me they aren’t showing up in our system. Then give two people the same ID number and tell me my stuff is broken. Then after that, make a really crappy custom report and ask me why it doesn’t work. Then you should send me the same data in 16 different files in 4 formats and act like it is 23 unique files.

Horses Are Big

Earlier this year, uncle Jim took my son down to the barn to see his horses. They left so quickly that I wasn't with them when they arrived inside the barn and my little boy found himself face-to-face with a horse's head—that was as big as my son's whole body! Well he got scared and I met them hurrying back and the poor little guy was pretty upset.

So my son has been a little scared of large animals for a while since then. But yesterday, we went to see uncle Jim's horses again; and I was with him this time. He even touched the big animals!

Another Minnesota Viking was arrested over the weekend. So there you go! I told you the Vikings could set an NFL record! They have accumulated the most arrests! Yay team!

Vikings Fumble Fart and Fall Down

I watched until I couldn't watch anymore (which was early in the third quarter). I can't blame the poor performance just on our quarterback situation even though I sure would have liked to have seen (Rookie) Teddy Bridgewater in there. Christian Ponder didn't seem to be getting any protection. It was a sad thing to see the Packers destroy the Vikings so badly. But to all the Packer fans who are mouthing off today, just remember you beat the Vikings' third-string quarterback.

After last weekend's temperatures in the 80's (Fahrenheit) and sunshine, we are likely to dip below freezing tonight. I must go and pick my tomatoes and squash. The root crops can wait but the surface crops are done as of today.

Wilkie in the Rain

I took my son to the Wilkie Unit of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge yesterday. The constant rain kept us from doing much hiking; but throwing rocks into the water under the bridge was fun.

Raptor Release!

On Saturday we went to the Carpenter Nature Center to see the Raptor release done by the Minnesota Raptor Center. They released seven birds that included three Bald Eagles, a Red-Shouldered Hawk, and some Broad-Winged and Red-Tailed hawks. This young Bald Eagle nearly flew over us. My son was on my shoulders and had a great view. You can hear him say, "That was a big one!"

Bad Data in Education

Sending assessment scores with NO identification numbers is really dumb. It might be common in the world of education (where much dumb thrives unchecked), but it is NOT a good way to keep track of data.

Furthermore, pulling a student ID number out-of-your-butt, is also a poor method. These numbers mean nothing to the database. You should try using REAL numbers next time.

Also bad, is sending multiple (different) students with duplicate student ID numbers. It is my understand, that each student should have a UNIQUE set of identifying numbers…

And finally, when your numbers are already crap, spelling the student names in a variety of ways is also NOT helpful. Example: “William” is not the same as “Billy” to the database—and who the heck is AJ?

Do you REALLY know who got which score? I mean, just guess—because it would work just as well! Excellent work educators!
