The Best Thing

The single best thing you can do for the world is to spend time with your children and teach them how to be respectful and successful.

A Child's Question: A Father's Tears

Once upon a time, a man tried to answer his child's question about why some people are mean. The man thought about it; because it was a very good question after all. Then he told his little one that there had always been some people who were mean and some who were kind—and we could only do our very best to make sure that kindness wins in the end. "Will there always be mean people?" asked the child. "I'm afraid so," answered the father. "There has always been—so it is likely there will always be." Then the man kissed his child and put the little one to bed and walked quietly out of the room. The man sat in the dark and cried. He cried for the world that was now his child's. —KJC

"tired of young black men getting killed by guns"

I feel bad for the woman. Her son was shot to death. Yet when she said she was tired of young black men getting killed by guns , I had to agree—and I also had to wonder who should be doing something about this? Should it be police? Asians? White People? Black People? It seems that most (if not all) of the shooting of young black men is done by other young black men. So I am of the opinion that the answer should come from within the same community that these victims and murderers are coming from. Why are so many young men carrying and firing guns? What kind of family support are they growing up with? The news stories always make it sound like the victims were completely innocent, yet there are people who can show evidence trails that say they are mixed up in some questionable stuff. Most of us are tired of people getting killed by guns and by violence—such as what happened at this victim's (supposed-to-be peaceful) tribute. Apparently some people have to fight even at a memorial! ...

State Rep. Garofalo Apologizes for NBA Tweet

So here is the Tweet, Rep. Pat Garofalo @PatGarofalo Follow Let's be honest, 70% of teams in NBA could fold tomorrow + nobody would notice a difference w/ possible exception of increase in streetcrime 6:33 PM - 9 Mar 2014 Is it worthy of the publicity? Is it worthy of an an apology ? Is it really a racist statement? Probably not. For those who choose to make this a racist thing, there have been one or two or even three players who were not African-American in the NBA . I know this even though I would probably not notice if the entire NBA folded tomorrow. As far as street crime, I watch the news and keep an eye out for who is causing trouble in my own neighborhood and my eyewitness accounts could never be "tweeted." But then I don't use Twitter . I also don't believe that certain groups are being systematically discriminated against on a wide scale in 2014 the way they may have been in 1960. I think that when more of a certain demographic are...
