Day 5: Hurry up and Wait

March 7, 2024 - Today was about getting home. We made it through the gauntlet. 2+ hours of driving from Marathon to Miami International Airport. 6-lane freeways, traffic, huge airport, checked bag on opposite end as gate and of course, the security check. We bought overpriced pizza and then had a 45-minute wait for boarding.

Picture Remake!

A little over 11 years ago, there was a picture of me with my son hiking. My wife thought we should remake that picture today. My son was a good sport and went along with it. Somehow, it didn't look right though. I think it mostly had to do with the fact that I was wearing sunglasses in the first picture, and I didn't have sunglasses with me today...

Resemblance

We were in the TV studio when I noticed the man. Everyone noticed, but they tried not to be noticed by him. He was frustrated. Something wasn’t working and he was growing angry. I thought maybe I could help. Afterall, I have considerable experience working in TV.   I approached and asked if I could help. Maybe it was a mistake. He was larger than me. Shaved head. He was younger, lean, and muscular. As he invaded my personal space, I could smell soap. He was clean. His eyes were brown, and showed an Asian heritage. I guessed he was an Asian/Caucasian mix.   I backed up a step and regained my personal space. But again, he closed it. He seemed confident, menacing, completely unafraid. I, on the other hand, was experiencing fear. But it was compartmentalized. It was controlled. Fighting was not a good option. I’m too old for that crap. But still, I worked through a mental checklist that included options for inflicting physical harm if that became the last resort.   ...

The Best Thing

The single best thing you can do for the world is to spend time with your children and teach them how to be respectful and successful.

Tarzan Legacy

I've begun reading my grandfather's Tarzan books; starting with I think the first one, "Tarzan of the Apes." It starts with Tarzan's parents and his adoption by Kala of the Apes (1914). The book has a note written inside from a friend of my grandfather dated November 1916. At that time grandpa would have been 13. The books were read by my father (and recently read again by him). I have begun reading these myself and I hope to give them to my son who loves reading. One interesting side-note, Grandpa Dubs would be 113 if he was still alive. I still remember when he gave the books to me prior to his death in 1981. He (correctly) told me that he thought I would value them.

Three Minutes!

Three minutes! I don't have time to wait for that!

What is Time to a Child?

What is time to a child? When you have only experienced a couple of Christmases or a few birthdays, time seems to be infinite and long. That will certainly change with age and perspective. My preschool age son is in the habit of "goofing off" and wasting time; and we are trying to make him understand that wasting time ends up reducing the time available for fun things! But it is a hard lesson when you are four. Last evening I took him swimming at a friend's pool and he kept getting sidetracked and wasting time instead of eating his dinner (which he had to finish before we went swimming). I think I convinced him that if he kept it up, we would not have time to go swimming. But afterward, getting ready for bed took way too long and so did getting up this morning. So he got a lecture from me which made him pout. So I hugged him and told him I love him and we can only see if we fight the same battle again or if he starts to understand. It could, of course, be part of a strug...
