With so many places closed due to COVID-19, Afton State Park was very busy with families, people and dogs out hiking. One of the high points for us was when we saw a half a dozen Bald Eagles out on the ice.

Our betta fish was looking quite beautiful in the sunshine this morning. We bought him almost a year ago in April 2019, and he has been a delight to watch.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought out the best in many people. There have been many encouraging stories of selfless acts by many good people. But I would like to recognize another group. Notably, the toilet paper assholes! These are the people who because of hoarding toilet paper, have caused an unnecessary shortage that need not ever have occurred otherwise. These assholes should be recognized for their "great contribution" to this state of emergency. Hopefully they will learn what it is like to be without something that they need at some point in their life.

Very recently the HR department where I work has reinforced my belief that all of us are expendable with little exception or thought. In my case, I had an unforeseen 2-day hospital stay that has prompted the organization to demand medical records from me. This was also accompanied by information about how my benefits will be cut if I cannot work unless I pay for them out of pocket. The record of my productivity numbers are stellar, and there are certain jobs within IT that only I am trained to do. It is obvious that I will be replaced if deemed necessary. It is interesting because I was already back to work when I started receiving these communications. It is good to remember that any loyalties that we develop toward our workplaces, are almost certainly not reciprocated. Make sure to always keep your own best interests in mind.

Is our only choice for President really a spoiled brat billionaire or a grouchy old man who thinks everyone can get everything for free? I had really hoped we could do better. I live in the middle. Our country and our politics and our society are polarized left or right; liberal or conservative. How can we ever hope to find any semblance of the truth? I stand by my word that the top candidates are ridiculously one sided. It is my right to have and voice my opinion. If anyone wants to discuss the finer attributes of either candidate or party, kindly do it on your own page not mine. It's a pity that everywhere I look, we have such narrow minded leaders. We should demand better. It is no wonder unscrupulous foreign governments want Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders to be the U.S. President. Neither one has a grasp of democracy. One is authoritarian and one is a socialist. They picked your candidates for you. Shouldn't we pick our own candidates who can see the bigger picture?

If we had no laws to prevent it, the U.S.A. would have a dictator right now. It's scary how close it has already come to that.

As much as I might like to, I can't change the past. I can, however, shape the future. One of the best ways to do that, may be to leave the past in the past. Bringing up negative emotions from long ago can be very destructive.

I think that maybe when a kid is in a contest, and the parent gets too involved, maybe it's not very fun for the kid anymore. Even if the kid doesn't win, maybe it's better to let them try without the parent taking over. That's just my opinion. But I'm not trained in child education or psychology...

Given the choice between doing what's best for living children and forcing the practice of ancient, ineffectual funeral obligations on them (into adulthood), I choose in favor of the living.

Having married a Hmong woman, I realize that the culture is very important to them. However, there are certain things that should be changed and stopped forever. These include, having multiple wives, selling daughters for $5,000 to their prospective husband's family, and 3-day funerals; which are often 4-day funerals--which involve sacrificing and processing numerous chickens, pigs and cows. I have seen how wasteful, expensive and stressful these are (for the living). I think the money could be much better spent putting children through college. Instead, tens of thousands of dollars are spent putting on lavish 24-hour funerals where mourners attend sometimes 24 hours a day. I have had to personally represent my wife since she is a woman; when she gives money to a funeral (due to the male dominated culture). Personally, I like to look at how far we have advanced over the years. That said, yesterday I had to stop someone who was spreading hateful lies about Hmong people. I have been intimately involved with the Hmong Community for the last decade and longer. I have married a Hmong woman. My family is mixed. While there are certain things in the culture that I disagree with, they do not eat dogs! They are not after your pet for dinner! This is simply crap and that is what I told the person who was spreading it yesterday! I would expect this in the 1980s but do not expect it today. Similarly, someone I know was sharing a completely ridiculous story on social media about a Muslim cashier confronting a young Caucasian boy who was wearing a crucifix. I added the Snopes story to this person's comments under the story. It is a complete fabrication. If people choose to spread hate, if they could at least do us the courtesy of sticking to the facts, I would appreciate it. Addendum: So now ...

HealthPartners just called me again to tell me that the coders have it just right. Even though my son had never seen his new doctor before and she was asking questions about his prescriptions, this was not considered preventive care. So they are charging for an additional office visit on top of the preventive visit. This is just a way to steal my money and it has to stop. Everyone who is sick of this needs to contact their state representative to ask that surprise billing stops.

Health Partners is billing for two simultaneous appointments because we had prescriptions refilled that were running out. They keep calling to tell me it is legitimate because it is a preexisting condition. I keep telling them it is "legal" theft because prescriptions are part of preventative care (which we don't pay for). They are now reaching for things in the "notes" to bolster their argument for taking my money. I've asked the Minnesota Attorney General to help—because this is one more reason that healthcare in the USA is broken and way too expensive.
