Star Wars: The Force Awakens

My wife and I went to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the cheap theater and we both thought it was great! The writers were smart enough to build it so it resembled the original movie—complete with a bar scene and Han Solo shooting a guy without looking at him and much battling. The movie sets you up for another when Luke Skywalker appears in the last scene. I recommend it for anyone—but especially those of us old enough to remember the original!

Freedom of Speech No Longer Guaranteed if White

The idea of Freedom of Speech appears to be lost in the USA for those who are white . White People should also not wear dreadlocks , as this is only for Black People . If you are white, you cannot say whatever you like (also known as Freedom of Speech) because it may cost you your job —if people of another race decide it was inappropriate. Whether the comments were true or false is irrelevant. The fact that someone of another race took offense makes you guilty and a racist. Don't expect a second chance. You will be convicted in a court of public opinion. It is best to keep your mouth shut and try to avoid the stress as others seek someone like you to blame for the crumbling social structure and social unrest of misdirected anger. Your heartless speech about truth and justice will not stop the street violence, the anger at police or the racial tension. It will only get you into trouble. While others may walk through public areas speaking freely in loud voices, you should keep...

Possible Correlation Crime and Race?

Has anyone ever considered the possibility, even if remote, that the reason Black men are sometimes killed by police is that they are part of a demographic that may comprise a higher than average number of representatives who are involved in criminal activity and possibly also uncooperative with law enforcement officers? Because if any of these questions are in the affirmative, someone should probably inform Black Lives Matter so that they are armed with solid facts.

The Left & Right of Presidential Politics

The Left & Right of Presidential Politics UnAssociated Press March 28, 2016 It was thought today that Donald Trump may have said something intelligent over the weekend. Unfortunately, no one could remember what it was after he kept talking for a few minutes. Analysts are reviewing recordings to make a final determination sometime later. On the other side of the spectrum, there is some rumor that one of Bernie Sanders ' supporters may have gotten (a part-time) job! Could this become a new trend? It is much too early to tell. Yes folks, this is politics at its best!

Teacher at Como Park High Unfairly Targeted by BLM

What About this is a Racial Attack? From what I can see, a Como Park High School teacher has been unfairly targeted for speaking the truth . In fact, I don't see anything that singles out any particular racial group in what he said! If you see yourself in the words, what does that tell you? If the truth is upsetting to you, what should you do about it? Should you "kill the messenger?" Should you fix your own issues or blame them on discrimination? This is utterly ridiculous and I have to think if people try to look past their misdirected anger, they will see that students have been allowed to break rules (and sometimes break teachers and staff) and ultimately, that will probably lead to more law breaking and incarceration in the future; will it not? When I worked in the detention room of a south suburban junior high, I had a very large special education student with a very bad attitude who was a regular in the detention room. He threatened to beat me up regularly too...

Lexi Page Removed from Family by Insane Law

Apparently this is about some insane law that only Native American people can adopt Native American children! Lexi is said to be 1/64 Native American so the Choctaw tribe has decided to traumatize this child to satisfy the power they have due to the Indian Child Welfare Act passed in the 1970's. Unfortunately, this misuse of power is doing anything but protecting child welfare. Shame on the tribe and shame of the legal system for letting this happen! A child should never be removed from a loving home over such political crap! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3505472/Custody-case-girl-six-ripped-foster-family-1-5-cent-Native-American-white-appealed-California-s-highest-court.html

Biological Parents Should Think of Child

After reading a story about a child being torn from her family in a custody battle , I can only wonder how the biological parents could do such a thing to their child? The girl went to live with a loving foster family at age two and now at age six she has been removed, kicking and screaming from the family who loves her to go live with her dysfunctional biological family. It is truly heartbreaking and extremely upsetting. Shouldn't the child's interests be considered over all else? I would ask her where she would like to live. Everyone else can could with HER decision.

The Guy at the Bank Who Says "Hi"

Who is that guy at the bank who says “hi” to me when I walk in and doesn’t seem to do anything else? Why do “we” need him? I don’t need someone to say “hi” and tell me which bank teller doesn’t have anyone in front of him/her. Of all the stupid things that is high on the list.

Brussels Attacks are a Wake-Up Call

When I got up this morning I found that half a world away, people were blown up in a terrorist attack in Belgium The cowards who killed and wounded the people who were navigating through rush hour were said to be part of the ISIS terrorist cells living in that European country. It should serve as a wake-up call to all of us. As the people who are so worried about their privacy protest about the battle between Apple and the FBI over unlocking an iPhone of known terrorists , I can only think that I would gladly let the FBI look in my phone if it would save innocent people from being killed by terrorists. Will our desire for personal freedoms be our ultimate demise? And what about the outcry against profiling? When people from the Middle East are allowed free rein of their new country is it just asking for trouble? I don't believe all of them are terrorists—but the ranks of the law abiding citizens of Somali descent here in Minnesota are producing new recruits for ISIS all the tim...

11 Year Old Wine Was Good!

Here is a wine I made over 10 years ago out of wild grapes and honey. I love the color and flavor—though it is not like any other wine I've ever had. In fact, the taste varies slightly between the batches I've made over the years. It is not sweet and not really dry. It has a good amount of alcohol in it. It is entirely natural and a decade in the bottle does no harm.

CuTRis Thought to be Sitting on Mountain Top UnAssociated Press March 17, 2016 Sources in a back alley of St. Paul have disclosed that CuTRis is sitting on top of a mountain in an undisclosed location. Apparently CuTRis is on some sort of strike and may not return until people try to be nicer.

This Beer Goes to 11

While finishing the recording of a song I wrote in 2014; called, "Away, Far Away," me and Dave enjoyed a beer we made in 2004. It was excellent and in no way worse for the 11+ years in the bottle. It was carbonated, had a head and tasted great. Of course, had it been pasteurized (which it wasn't), it probably would have spoiled.

Speculation: The U.S. Under Trump or Sanders

As you go to the polls, think about the USA under the leadership of either Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders. Trump is like the rich kid bully you grew up with and Sanders is a guy who is followed by people who don't like to have to work. Here in Minnesota, we once voted for a professional wrestler because we were sick of politicians. It was not a good thing even though it might have seemed like a good idea at the time. Seriously think about the consequences of either a candidate that is so far left that we can't pay the bills or one that is so far right we can't get along with each other. I know there isn't much to choose from but there is still time to choose more wisely.

White Privilege

When I sit in a room full of people who all look more like each other than they look like me I think about White Privilege. When I am asked to put my racial and ethnic demographics on an application form I think about White Privilege. When the spokesman for the black newspaper I applied to be a writer at told me the interviewer was not there I thought about White Privilege. Whenever I watch the Latin Grammys I think about White Privilege. When I watch Black Entertainment Television I think about White Privilege. When I am not allowed to show pride in my race because I am called a racist or supremacist I think about White Privilege. When I hear about the Miss Black America Pageant I think about White Privilege. When I hear about the NAACP I think about White Privilege. When I get information about groups to support Black or Asian or Latino students I think about White Privilege. When I hear about Affirmative Action I think About White Privilege. Bad Taste at Joe's Crab Shack

The story that broke yesterday about the photo of a lynching found in a table at Joe's Crab Shack in Roseville is (I think) offensive to anyone who possesses a sense of right and wrong. It is inappropriate no matter what color anyone is. It should be removed and an apology from the corporate powers would be in order—though in no way is it mandatory; as we live in a country that preserves freedom of speech—even if that speech is stupid and outdated. Yes, unfortunately, there was probably a time when this picture with its caption about not liking the gumbo would be considered funny by some. But today it is not. It is inappropriate, just as the NAACP's own name should probably be changed because it would certainly be inappropriate for me to call its membership "colored people;" yet that is the name of the organization isn't it? Perhaps a hyphenated name would more reflect the political correctness of the current era. While I find the picture embedded in that table ...

Bringing in the Bobs

Whenever a company brings in the bobs, it is usually to pretend to be looking for solutions to bad business decisions—that they (i.e. management) have no intention of fixing appropriately. This tactic, however, is a way of deflecting the bad decision making onto a consulting firm that will gladly accept the blame—for tens of thousands of dollars in fees. It is a win-win for "everyone."

This Presidential Election is an Embarrassment

I'm going to just go ahead and say that this presidential election is an embarrassment. There are no really good candidates. Donald Trump has hijacked the Republican Party—and apparently there are a lot of unhappy right-wingers who are supporting him. On the Democratic side, there is an aging socialist who appeals to the young people—who aren't likely to look at all the fallout from his particular brand of politics. It might look good at the surface, but underneath it is likely to cause a whole new set of problems. There is also Hillary Clinton who might have the skills, but is pulling around a lot of baggage from the past that might make trusting her difficult—though trusting any politician may be difficult if you think on it. So, none of these candidates would be my first choice. But when has the public ever gotten to pick the original candidates? Sure, we can vote for the last remaining millionaires but that first group just "pops" up somehow. It would sure be nic...

Super Tuesday

Honk If You Are an A-Hole

I've noticed that people like to honk their horns and get angry while driving. Often I have no idea what has them all riled up. This morning as I was waiting to turn left in the far left lane, another car in the far right lane sped past honking its horn. I was obviously not in the way and not blocking traffic. I was merely waiting for the green arrow so I could turn left onto the freeway. There didn't seem to be any other cars close by at that exact moment. So what was it about? Perhaps some people are just A-Holes...

The Right Thing for Who?

I have, from time to time, mentioned my frustrations and observations regarding culture and my experiences with having married into a Hmong family. Over the weekend, I was told by a brother-in-law (who is Hmong but from another family) that having my name changed (this requires a big expensive, time-consuming and labor intensive party) is "the right thing to do." This of course, caused me to respond that I am not changing my name and certainly not letting someone else (in this case my father and mother in-law) pick a Hmong name for me. Then I told him that since the beginning (when I was going to marry my wife), "people" (i.e. Hmong people) have been telling me how I have to do things and I have repeatedly stated that I am not Hmong; and therefore not bound by any of their (many) "rules." Whenever I make this declaration, I get either anger and threats, or as in this case, a face that looks like I just shit on his favorite rug. So if this name change thi...

Do Over!

Do Over! I sure wish we could do that with the presidential election! Not because I want to go through it all over again—but because I really don't like any of the candidates. Why do I always have to vote for the one I dislike the least? And when do we get to have a candidate who represents the hard-working people of middle-America?

Nice to Be Needed

Though I was on a (annual) business trip, and though in my absence there was (by my wife and young son) a trip to the market that included buying ice cream, and a trip to the mall and eating out, I was told that "we" needed milk just before I went to bed (last night after coming home). Apparently no one can buy milk like dad can. It's nice to be "needed," even if no one actually acknowledges it verbally.

Advice From An Old Lady

While at the grocery store today, I walked past the display of Easter candy. Suddenly an elderly woman said, "Wouldn't it be nice to be a little kid again so someone would give you an Easter basket?" I replied that I have a young son and I get to experience it through him! I told her I bought him a chocolate bunny ; but his mom is very anti-sugar and probably won't like it. The woman said, that I should tell her that little kids should have some goodies too! I told her that I can't really tell my wife anything. "Well how did you end up with her?" she asked. I answered, "They're all like that!" Then she said, "No they aren't! You enjoy your son and keep looking and you will find a nice one someday!" I was a little stunned and said, "Well maybe I'll stick it out and hope for the best." Then she looked serious and said, "Just don't lose yourself!" Then I thanked her and said goodbye; because ...

Leave the Past in the Past

Perhaps the most destructive thing a person can do to any long-term personal relationship, is to repeatedly bring up their own version of everything the other person has ever done wrong. Never being able to give up a single unpleasant event whether actual or perceived, will ultimately cause the recipient of this continued emotional assault to remove himself from the relationship. So unless you prefer to be alone, it is wise to leave the past in the past and move on. If you cannot or if you refuse to do so, you will bring misery to yourself and those around you.

Slick Road Brick Head

To the driver who was following me so closely (in the dark) that I couldn't see the headlights on his/her car but I knew it was behind me. Maybe you didn't notice, but the road was pretty slippery in places and I had my son in the backseat of my car. So when we turned off and you started honking as you sped away (presumably because you thought that I was going too slowly ), I hope you felt better after honking and "getting it out of your system." I'm very sorry that my responsible driving with a child in my car caused you such an inconvenience. I hope you can see it in your heart to forgive my transgression. You A-Hole.

Police Stories

I've noticed that a lot of news-stories lately tend to be about police brutality or else police officers being shot . I have to wonder if being under so much scrutiny is in some cases, preventing officers from adequately protecting themselves.

Three Minutes!

Three minutes! I don't have time to wait for that!

Are The Best People Being Hired?

Since the primary goal (especially in the public sector) seems to be increasing the number of non-white employees (for example police, teachers and high level positions), are "we" as a society hiring the most qualified people; or are qualifications secondary to racial percentages? If they are, then don't become upset when things are mismanaged and quality is compromised. I've said it before and here it is one more time... If I was hiring someone for a job in a company I owned or represented, why would I not hire the most qualified person—regardless of their skin color? I would be a fool to pass up the best applicant over their demographics. Yet, when this is practiced in reverse, it is called, "affirmative action." My opinion is that until "we" stop making such a big issue out how many people of a particular group (qualified or not) are in a particular occupation, we will not only not solve the disparity, but we will further perpetuate the issues ...

What is Time to a Child?

What is time to a child? When you have only experienced a couple of Christmases or a few birthdays, time seems to be infinite and long. That will certainly change with age and perspective. My preschool age son is in the habit of "goofing off" and wasting time; and we are trying to make him understand that wasting time ends up reducing the time available for fun things! But it is a hard lesson when you are four. Last evening I took him swimming at a friend's pool and he kept getting sidetracked and wasting time instead of eating his dinner (which he had to finish before we went swimming). I think I convinced him that if he kept it up, we would not have time to go swimming. But afterward, getting ready for bed took way too long and so did getting up this morning. So he got a lecture from me which made him pout. So I hugged him and told him I love him and we can only see if we fight the same battle again or if he starts to understand. It could, of course, be part of a strug...

Coffee Drive-Thru Line

Whenever I see one of those giant lines at a coffee drive-thru in the morning, I always wonder why someone would choose to do that every day. Is it to save time by not having to make coffee? Is it because the coffee tastes better than if they made it themselves? I agree that sometimes it is worthwhile to pay a professional—but for coffee? I can make excellent coffee at home in minutes with a mug, a funnel and filter, and a coffee grinder and some beans. I can also make a week's worth for the cost of one purchased at a coffee shop. I can only guess that the attraction is not having to make it yourself and having enough time to sit in your car waiting for your coffee so you can text your friends or post a twitter about waiting in line for your coffee.

Super Bowl 50

Due to a very busy weekend and trying to get everything finished, I must admit that I didn't give Super Bowl 50 as much attention as I have given other NFL championship games. I was hoping on some level that the Carolina Panthers would win simply because they never have. However, I must admit I like Peyton Manning so if he won the big game (again) with the Denver Broncos in his last NFL game, I'm happy for him.

Handy Cultural Translator

It can be interesting, challenging and frustrating dealing with people from another culture. After working in a situation where I was often the minority, and after marrying into a particular Asian culture, I have learned some things. The first is that logic has little to do with it. That's right folks, Spock would be quite out of his element! The second is, that extremely important cultural values and traditions today, might mean little tomorrow—depending on which side of the advantage to be gained, an individual finds him/herself on. Also, women may traditionally have limited power, which means that women can be ruthless in seeking it. Additionally, men will not acknowledge a woman's rights—except when she marries into another family. Another good thing to remember, is that if you are white, you will be wrong no matter what. If you disagree, you are a racist. I'm not saying this is true or accurate, just that this is often the view or tactic used to gain an advantage. M...

Snow No!

While following a car on the freeway after yesterday’s big snowfall I marveled that someone could be so dumb as to not brush the snow from the vehicle before driving. Obviously the driver could not see my car behind his/hers with several inches of snow covering the windows. Is safety really that inconvenient?

Even in the Darkest Places

He was a sick and twisted man. He liked to gossip about the "sins" of others but he didn't see any of his own. He loved his sisters. Maybe he loved them too much. His attraction may have prevented a healthy relationship with a non-related woman. Well that and his inability to be responsible or get a job and earn an income. He slept late. He didn't like to work. He didn’t like to shovel or mow or do much except put pictures on his Facebook; because one day, he might be known as a great artist. He wasn't good at talking. His social skills were sub-par. His motivation nearly nonexistent. He let his parents support him and take care of him; decade after decade. But he still had lots of "advice" for others about marriage and raising children—of which he had done neither. He was talented. He could spot other people’s shortcomings and he was always right! He had computers and smartphones and cameras and Wi-Fi and Netflix and he didn't have to work for it! ...

St. Paul Public Schools Bans Holidays

St. Paul Public Schools Bans Holidays UnAssociated Press January 29, 2016 In order to make children from diverse backgrounds feel more welcome, St. Paul Public Schools plans to ban "dominant" holidays ; that are enjoyed by the majority of children throughout the United States. Such horrid traditions as celebrating Valentine's Day, Halloween and Thanksgiving, will no longer be tolerated in the spirit of making everyone feel equally left-out. "How can we celebrate the pilgrims feasting and eating turkey with the indigenous Americans, when it might be upsetting to an immigrant from another country?” said one school administrator. “We just can't assume that a holiday like Thanksgiving could have a wide appeal and be a truly secular American celebration!" Already plans are in the works to eliminate Independence Day, Christmas, New Years and any other "dominant" holiday that might not be celebrated by people arriving here from other parts of the world....

Trump Wins Debate

Trump Wins Debate UnAssociated Press January 29, 2016 Though Donald Trump was not at the GOP Presidential debate yesterday , he still won! Undeniably, Mr. Trump sounded smarter and more likeable when he wasn't there; than if he had attended. Furthermore, it should be (but isn't) plain to everyone that if Trump is faced with unpleasant people or situations as President, he will likely just skip the debate or conference and have his own by himself. This will be a good strategy for America—and will show the rest of the world how cooperative the USA is. It seems that no matter what Trump does, there are enough angry right-wing conservatives to prove that he is always right! Hopefully, Donald Trump will miss more events—as it can only serve to increase his popularity when he is absent!

Trump Afraid to Debate

Donald Trump will not be participating in the GOP Presidential debate on Fox News tomorrow night . Even though Fox TV is the most conservative venue, it seems that Trump does not like Megyn Kelly . Since Kelly will be one of the moderators, Trump is going to take his toys and go home! Good for you Mr. Trump! Now we know how you will handle uncomfortable situations that might come up if you become President!

20% Chance of Snow

Outside the window, the snow is flying sideways. On the Internet, the weather report says that there is a 20% chance of snow. The fact that it is snowing quite a lot right now leads me to believe the chance is actually far greater than that. But the good news is that if the snow is flying sideways, there should be no accumulation right? It should just blow away!

Business as Usual

I've actually been pretty busy in my job. But I have gotten pretty good at it so I can do it pretty fast. Therefore I can keep up with the current workload and do some other projects. Still, the manager had to throw another rewrite of some documentation at me today—with the (highly motivating) comment that I'm "not that busy right now." It made my blood boil. I said to look at "sent" mail instead of incoming to gauge the activity level. It seems that if I work fast and keep the customers satisfied, it translates into "not that busy" to someone who looks only at the number of unfinished requests. So should I work more slowly then? MONDAY UPDATE: I just finished Friday's work. I haven’t started the stuff that came in over the weekend. I’m going to have lunch first since I’m really "not that busy." I might be able to start on today’s work this afternoon. It’s great being appreciated. Updated Update: Apparently we have an office tattle...

The Pounders

By Kevin J. Curtis     On the Planet Ganus 12, things were not good. There was a rift that had developed between the inhabitants and it was blamed on how they looked—rather than how they acted. It was looked at superficially without ever trying to understand the true reality of the unfortunate situation.     The Pounders looked like everyone else in most ways. They had two eyes, two arms, two legs a nose and mouth just like everyone did. Except that they had wedge-shaped heads. Oh don’t get me wrong, there was nothing substantially wrong with their heads; they were just wedge-shaped. The Pounders’ heads were of relatively normal size and were topped by normal looking hair.     Most Pounders went to school, had jobs and were hardly noticed by the rest of society—except for one thing. A certain percentage of Pounders were involved in an activity that had led to the unfortunate name this group had become known by. There were some who for no apparent ...

The Peanuts Movie

Yesterday being below zero temperatures all day, we took our son to see The Peanuts Movie at the cheap theater . The movie was good and at 88 minutes was just about as much as a four-year-old could sit still for—even if he was thoroughly into it. The movie contained all the original shtick that one would expect plus a few new twists. In my opinion, Charlie Brown may have the widest appeal of any comic/cartoon character. Of course the supporting cast is exceptional too. I highly recommend the movie for children of all ages.

Why Autopsy Took So Long

Charter School Discusses Transmogrification Policy

A long and possibly unnecessary meeting took place yesterday as a St. Paul Charter School discussed its Transmogrification Policy . Students are already forbidden to harass each other over transmogrify ing into new forms. That is not good enough for the various groups who want to protect transmogrified students by pushing non-political issues into the political arena. The child(ren) involved are likely too young to fully understand the concept of transmogrification—and fortunately there are plenty of politically correct adults who are ready to make a big deal out of it to further education, liberalism and confusion about who "we" all are.

Amongst all the talk about police "gunning down" people of African-American ancestry, I keep seeing stories like this one. http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2016/01/04/police-maplewood-woman-strangled-in-home-invasion/ Then I start wondering if "everyone" has lost focus about which lives matter? Does anyone protest after a child is killed or after (as in the story I mentioned above) an elderly woman was robbed at gunpoint and then strangled and left for dead? Does this elderly woman not matter and if so why not? Is she the wrong color to matter? I think most of us can agree that all lives matter. However, I would seriously wonder about that person who could steal the money and valuables that an older, weaker person had worked for—and then stand over her and listen to her choke and watch her pain as he strangles the life out of her. Does this person really deserve a protest when the day comes that he is confronted by police? What kind of message are "we"...
