First Tick of 2022

Hiking off trail is fun!
You can see cool things.
Like awesome scenery!
But there can be small dangers, like Deer Ticks.

False Prophets

“…And they waved their scrap of truth like a banner—through the streets while pulling the wagonload of lies and distributing hate and distrust throughout the land. For even as they preached about the injustices, their own words and actions betrayed the reality and contributed to the death, decay and misery.”

Yellow-Shafted Flicker

The bird was large and I got my binoculars. My cell phone couldn't get a good photo--until I took it through the binoculars.

Friends and Family

Nothing is so wonderful as hearing my parents and my son laughing together...

The BFH

Sometimes when you're digging out that rotten fence post, you need a sledgehammer. That's especially true when someone seemed to have used a lot of concrete when they installed it.

Parenting Means Children First

If you are a parent, you should feed your kids at a reasonable time, rather than let them go without adult supervision to get fast food after 9:00pm on a school night. Then you should make sure that they get to bed at a decent time so that they can do well in school. This is called being responsible and proactive.

If you receive a call that your kids are in the back of a police car and they are underage, you probably weren’t paying attention to your kids or their needs (or safety). Instead of blaming the police who detained the children during a “shots fired” investigation, you should be happy that the kids are safe. Then you should STOP blaming others (being reactive), STOP using (and teaching) inappropriate language and behavior (irresponsible), and put your children’s needs before whatever it was you were occupied with when you should have been parenting.

Good parenting is the most important thing that we can do for our children. They lack the maturity to make responsible choices because they are still developing. If their parents also lack the maturity to make responsible choices, they are setting a bad example and setting the stage for more irresponsible behavior.

Toilet Bugs

I keep catching ladybugs and boxelder bugs in the windows. I don't like to kill them, so I usually put them in the toilet so they can live there. But for some reason, whenever someone flushes the toilet, they decide to go with the flow instead of staying. Go figure! That's probably why wild animals don't make good pets.

Neighborhood Turkeys

The turkeys come through the neighborhood several times a day.

Nature's Teachings

When you spend a lot of time in wild places, you learn things. Things like what might not look like a trail to most people--because it wasn't made by people, most certainly is a trail. And if you follow it, you will probably be better off than if you try crashing through the brush. If you pass by a grove of trees, and you catch the sight of a coyote trotting through, you will see that coyote again in your mind the next time you pass that grove of trees; and every time after that. You learn to navigate brambles, and nettles, and whether you can climb that bluff or cross that stream. But it isn't like textbook learning. It's much more real.

Minnesota Spring

Snow in the morning, and seedlings outside under glass by noon.

Context

Of course, my observations about how much more things are costing me, are much ado about nothing when you consider that Ukrainian civilians have been tortured and shot with their hands tied behind their backs by invading Russian soldiers.
