Minnesota Vikings Regain Fumbling Abilities

Minnesota Vikings Regain Fumbling Abilities

The Minnesota Vikings football team has regained its missing fumbling game with the return of Adrian Peterson. While numerous announcers have commented that the running back has such a strong grip that it "hurts" to shake hands with him, he still cannot hold onto the football very well. The much anticipated return after an early season injury, has reestablished the Vikings fumbling abilities and should greatly improve their downward spiral that began just after the bye week.

The Minnesota Gopher Football team has decided to end their boycott of playing in a bowl game; once someone explained to them that they would not actually get to play (in the Holiday Bowl on December 27) unless they did. The team stands by their teammates who have been accused and cleared and then suspended for allegedly sexually assaulting a drunk girl. Rah rah go team!

Jingle Bells Batman Smells...

The Holidays bring out the best in people! Like at my house…

My Son: Dad, sing that Jingle Bells song again!
Me: Jingle bells jingle bells jingle all the way…
My Son: No! Not that one. The other one about Batman!
Me: Jingle Bells Batman smells Robin laid an egg, the Batmobile lost its wheel and Joker got away! Hey!
My Son: I like that song!
Me: Me too.

Many Decisions

I have much thinking to do.

Into the Darkness

Yesterday evening after dark, in the rain, I noticed two separate drivers without the lights on in their cars. One was coming as I was turning and I saw her at the last moment. I tried to tell her to turn her lights on; but she was extremely angry with me for cutting her off (because I couldn't see her coming in the dark). Between the rain, people who won't stop for red lights or get over for emergency vehicles, this makes driving dangerous!

But this morning, I made a mistake too. I came out of the well lit bathroom like I always do but when I turned out the light it was completely dark in the hallway. So I walked for the kitchen like I always do; because we have a motion light that comes on. But I misjudged where the corner of the wall was, leading out to the garage. So now I have a good reminder to be more careful!

Warning about Walmart Online Orders

I ordered something from Walmart online.
When I got the notice it was being shipped it included the information that I could not return it to Walmart but had to pay shipping to return it to the original manufacturer.
So I cancelled the order by cancelling delivery through FedEx.
I will never trust using Walmart to order online again.

One Coat Paint

We recently painted our bathroom. We were talked into an expensive "one-coat" paint because it had a rebate.
In my world, there is no such thing as one-coat paint. Not the one we just used and not any other. I prefer to paint twice; as opposed to going back to touch-up 37 times afterward.
I do not believe in one-coat paint!

"This paint is so great you need only put a few drops on your brush and touch it to the wall and the entire room will be painted!"
Sure it will.

It's Wrong

I recently posted an unfortunate incident a friend of mine experienced on the light-rail. Today a different friend messaged me that a white guy was harassing a black guy on the train. I told him to call the police. There is no room for bad behavior regardless of who it is directed at. We all know racism and being mean is wrong; so why does it still happen?

Electoral College

For anyone who is of the opinion that the USA should ban the Electoral College as the outdated, dysfunctional system that it is, I say, "Yes. We should definitely ban it." While it may have once had some usefulness, I no longer write books on a typewriter and there is no good reason to continue to do so. Nor is there a good reason to use the Electoral College—except to continue to have Presidents who won the election despite losing the Popular Vote.

Refrigerator is Warm but Freezer Cold?

If your refrigerator is warm but the freezer portion is cold, likely the refrigerator is working properly—but someone has improperly adjusted it. If your refrigerator has a temperature control that turns manually, it is likely operating a diverter valve. That means that turning it to "colder" in your freezer is likely diverting the cold air away from going into the refrigerator portion. Even if you "turn up" the colder knob in the refrigerator, the cold airflow from the freezer has been closed. The problem can be compounded when the freezer becomes too cold and ice develops inside of the airflow conduit. Simply by turning the "cold" back to the mid-range in the freezer, your refrigerator may recover in a day or two. This, in most cases, is preferable to buying a new refrigerator.

Hey Protesters

Okay, I understand that some people can't accept that "their" candidate was not elected. But while you have the right to protest, you do not have the right to put lives in danger by protesting on the freeway! Did all of these protesters vote? I know an idiot with a lot of opinions who posted a photo of his election ballot that he had written in a fictional character from a movie on! Nice move idiot! You might as well have stayed home because your "protest vote" did no good except to (presumably) "impress" your Facebook friends. And to the people who now have a "black void" where their photo was (again on Facebook), your candidate lost. I understand. Mine lost too. But we live in a country where we vote instead of having a bloody coup d’état to choose our leaders. It might not be perfect and it maybe didn't go the way you wanted it to go—but grow up. You won't always get your way and you still "don't get to" endanger lives by stopping freeway traffic because you didn't get your way. You don't have the right to defy police or authority either. You certainly can protest and act like a spoiled child and do and say ridiculous things and spout out nasties on Facebook if you wish. But it doesn't change a thing. It only shows that you have a lack of maturity and self-control. And maybe it's people like that who ruined the election for you. Maybe the nasty names you called your friend because he disagreed with your whining makes you sound just like that guy you didn't want to win. So if you think it is fine to act just like him, why are you so upset that he won?

Now that Trump has Won

I won’t deny that I am not only shocked by the outcome of the presidential election, but I am a bit depressed by it. But I’ve been around long enough to have learned a few things. One is that I/we survived Ronald Reagan; and so we will now survive this as well. Two, being a Minnesotan, I saw voters abandon established politics and politicians in favor of a former “pro wrestler.” It seemed like a good idea at the time; but Jesse turned out to be a bad choice.

So is it possible that while he appeared to be a bad choice from the start, that Donald Trump could be a good President? I don’t know, but we have to give him the chance now that he has won the election. It is our way and our law. He did, in fact, in his acceptance speech, ask for all of us, whether we supported him during the election or not, to join with him to reunite our country after a mean and nasty election. And whatever else I might think, I think we owe him that much. Because enough people in the country did vote for him so that he won. If you can’t salute the man, at least salute the rank.

Are there tough times ahead? Yes, that is likely. The guy who pulled a gun on me in traffic over a year ago, has posted his gun on his Facebook to commemorate the victory. I can only imagine that those whose demographic groups were attacked in the election campaign process must be bitter this morning. Yet the news media found representatives from these same groups who were overjoyed by the victory of Trump and of the GOP.

So now I will advocate that we stay calm and make the best of the next four years. And if we aren’t happy with the person who is President four years from now, use your vote to change it then. Humanity seems to need to swing from one side to the other—often missing the middle completely. Those of us in “Middle America” know that very well; because the candidates never quite seem to represent those of us in the middle. But we are here now. So we must work for the common good.

The New (Old) Cedar Bridge

We visited the (new) Old Cedar Bridge yesterday. I remember the old bridge was how we got to my grandparents' houses when I was a kid. It is a fantastic area for hiking, biking and birdwatching.

I went fishing from a dock for a short time today. That isn't so unusual; except that it is November 4th and the temperature outside was 65 degrees (F)!

Blatant Racism

I hate to believe that blatant racism still exists, but it does. My friend was telling me about his experience on the light-rail system the other day. He said a guy refused to move his legs so that he could get past to sit down. The same guy refused to let an elderly woman pass as well. Obviously he was looking to start some kind of trouble but neither my friend or the woman fell into his plan. But each time when the guy kept his legs in the way, he loudly said, "White F__k Face!" So yes, I'm sure racism is still a problem.

City Job Application

I applied for and later interviewed for a city job recently. Then the next week I received a letter telling me that I had not gotten the job. So I emailed the people on the letter—asking for any helpful feedback about why I was not selected. After two days the email reply told me that they were looking for more about “project implementation;” and I had not spent any time talking about that. So I replied thanking them for the helpful feedback because indeed I had not. I also included the job description and noted for them that “project implantation” was not referenced at all (not even once) in that job description. So I wonder what the real reason was then?

The Ultra-Liberal

I had occasion to talk to an Ultra-Liberal the other day. He obviously was much smarter than me; because when I disagreed with him—even slightly, he became agitated and upset. For instance, neither of us like the idea of Donald Trump as President, yet I'm not a huge fan of Hillary Clinton either. The Ultra-Liberal told me that Hillary Clinton is the best candidate for President that there has ever been. Me not accepting that got him riled up. Later he began to tell me how African-Americans are targeted and shot by police "way more often" than others; and again, I disagreed. He was supposedly citing hard data even after telling me nobody has been keeping track of it. I told him to check killedbypolice.net; because you can often follow the links and discover the likely racial identity of the individuals who were shot. I told him that when, I did this, it did not appear that African-Americans were being killed by police more often than other races. He did not seem to be very interested in this source of data. I also told him about my experiences with racial unrest and legal allegations from my time working in county government. Again, he dismissed this because my "life is a dichotomy" and has no basis in the rest of the world. He told me I should "read the data." This came from a man who once lectured me on religion—including Islam; though he admitted to never having read the Quran; which though I am obviously less well-read than he is, I have read. I tried to remind him that data can be manipulated and I prefer to believe what I see and hear in person. He then threw up his hands as if to block my heathen beliefs from coming any nearer to him! I told him that since he was an ultra-liberal and I tend to see multiple sides to issues, we probably would not agree. At this point he sharply announced that my declaration (i.e. ultra-liberal) was "unfair;" and he retreated back to his own domain. I was slightly stunned; because I often enjoy conversations where others have different views from my own. However, in this case, I was obviously outmatched by his superior intellect—and so it was probably best we parted ways amiably. Because after all, I rarely (if ever) can agree wholeheartedly with anyone else's or any group or organization's entire doctrine—because I can always seem to find some part or parts of it that have swayed too far and then I can't believe in them.

Fountain City and Alma Wisconsin

We took a short trip to Wisconsin and saw the Rock in the House in Fountain City.

We stayed at Hawks View Cottages, which was really an amazing place. The cottages are built into the bluff and have stilts on the side looking down. The Marsh Hawk cottage was very clean and comfortable.

We checked in at the tasting room of Seven Hawks Vineyard.

After checking out the next day, we went to Alma, Wisconsin. My wife enjoyed the shopping and the view from Buena Vista Park.

I was impressed by the collection of ancient weaponry at the Castle Rock Museum.

Donald Trump may have a point when he says the election (that has not happened yet) for the U.S. Presidency is rigged. To be fair, people like Trump who are rich and used to getting whatever they want by using their wealth to obtain it, may believe that when they are unable to buy something (like an elected office), that the "system is rigged" against them.

How to Achieve Racial Harmony

It occurred to me sometime ago, that the key to racial harmony does not exist in government affirmative action programs. It does not exist in angry shouts and insinuations. It does not exist in guilt or forced regulations or any of the like. The key to racial harmony is my family. It is the family next-door; and all of the multiracial families everywhere. Because humans tend to fight over differences; racial or otherwise. They also tend to become interested in the opposite sex of the people around them—which often includes those who they may have had occasion to be at odds with. Then they intermarry and have interracial and multicultural children. Eventually this phenomenon makes it difficult to dislike a particular racial or cultural group—when members of your own family identify partially or entirely with that group. In other words, as people intermarry and our offspring become more "mixed," the division between the races is bound to begin to fade away into history. —KJC

Police Shooting Victims Similarity

Of course every incident is different, but I keep seeing a common theme in police shootings of unarmed people. The people who get shot don’t seem to be following directions. Despite the continued push to make us believe that only Black men are shot by police, killedbypolice.net says otherwise. What I see in most of the posted videos, is police with guns drawn; and the person who gets shot not getting down on the ground with their hands in the air. Instead, they seem to be continuing to move toward some other objective.

If someone pulled a gun on me, I would try to run away; unless I knew it was a police officer. Then I would be very careful to follow directions to avoid agitating the officer pointing the gun at me!

But from my work in county social services and also in schools, I learned that there are people in our society who do not think that anyone can make them do anything and they persist in that belief regardless of the outcome. In fact, life has become so cheap in some communities, that some people don’t seem to care one way or the other if they kill someone or die themselves.

So the protesters are not going to solve this. Looting and burning adds fuel to the controversy—as do the people who act like this is strictly a racial thing. It isn’t. Most of America does not care what color you are if you have lots of money. In order to get money, you need to learn how to follow rules, work hard and get a good education. There are certain communities who have not yet "bought in" to these ideals; and so they can never get ahead. I believe, it is these same groups that cannot follow directives from authority figures—even if a gun is being pointed at them at the time.

So the yelling and the protests are merely an undisciplined reaction to a larger problem that is almost completely being ignored. As I have said before, if Black lives really matter, then someone should try to address the statistically much higher number of Black deaths caused by other African-Americans. So much effort is going into reacting to police shootings and almost none goes to address the real issues. The irony and the tragedy is that this direction will only make things worse until people learn to accept the truth and invest in real solutions.

"Muslims Get Out" sign in Lonsdale

http://kstp.com/news/sign-lonsdale-controversy-muslims-get-out-phrase/4268188/?cat=1

To everyone who is offended by the redneck who posted the "Muslims Get Out" sign outside of his restaurant, you all have provided him with national free advertising by paying so much attention to it. If you don't like it, you should eat somewhere else. I saw the guy on TV and he loves the attention and free advertising.

Driving Primer

It seems like everyone who drives is supposed to already know this; but I see people driving every day who don't care enough to follow some simple rules. So here they are,

1. When it is dark (or raining) TURN YOUR LIGHTS ON.

2. When an ambulance, police car or firetruck comes behind you with lights flashing PULL OVER AND STOP. Then when they pass, go back into traffic NORMALLY. Don't try to beat everyone else.

3. When a vehicle is coming toward you WAIT UNTIL IT PASSES instead of pulling out in front of it.

4. Put your phone down.

5. At a Stop Sign you should actually STOP.

6. When waiting at a traffic signal, WATCH THE LIGHT instead of doing other things—so you know when to go.

7. Avoid honking and changing lanes every 4 seconds. This increases the likelihood of causing an accident.

8. Try to keep your vehicle within the lane you are driving in.

9. Slow down. Speed limits are not simply suggestions.

10. Control your anger. Driving a car is not combat.

11. Allow cars that are signaling to merge. Driving is not a competition.

Upside Down

I recently told my wife that I was going to start keeping the unopened boxes of breakfast cereal upside down because they tend to settle so that the heavier things like raisins go to the bottom. My thinking is that when I opened the box, I would turn it right side up and instead of the first pour being just flakes, I would get the mixture I desired.

So yesterday, my wife opened the new box. She opened it from the bottom because it was upside down. She didn't do this as a joke, she did not notice that it was upside down or that it (must have been) was harder to open. She is simply blind to food related dates, positioning, quantity or freshness (or rottenness), or price (vs. value) or variety... which perhaps is why I do nearly all of the cooking and grocery shopping.
But still, I am sometimes simply amazed by things such as the opening of the cereal box from the bottom...

Do Black Lives Matter in Chicago?

I'm just wondering if Black Lives Matter will try to stop the murders that are now up to 518 in Chicago for this year? If one African-American is shot by police, Black Lives Matter will protest. 518 is a big number and most of the dead are black and most of the shooters are black. I'm just wondering if anyone will organize and protest about this.

To Goodwill Music Thief

To the person who stole all the good music CD's from Goodwill.

You have good taste in music. Out of the 8 or 10 CD's I opened because I might want to buy one, you had stolen the CD's out of the cases of 6 of them. Now I like good Rock music too, so I can understand why you chose those disks. I like to buy them. But I can understand how a scumbag like you might not want to pay the $1.99 for a used CD. I mean if you are a lowlife enough to steal from a charitable organization, then you certainly wouldn't want to pay for 6 (or probably more) CD's. I hope you feel good about it. Goodwill could have made a couple of bucks from me yesterday; but the CD's I wanted had been stolen by you so they didn't. Way to make a negative impact on society. I'm sure since I alerted Goodwill that some idiot thief has been stealing their CD's, they will need to remove the disks from the cases like other stores often do. I hope you enjoy listening to your CD's! Incidentally, if you are stealing them to rip them, the library lets you borrow CD's free of charge!

No Fish this Morning but Caught this Sunrise

Electric Toothbrush Refill Savings

I have an Oral-B Spin toothbrush. I like it because it works well. But the refill brushes are extremely overpriced. I have bought generics, and they often don't fit quite right. Nothing is more annoying than when the brush head comes off while you are brushing. So I have devised a simple solution. By adding a small (and I mean tiny) drop of Super Glue inside the refill brush where it touches the plastic (non-spinning) part of the brush handle (usually two drops—one on both sides) I decrease the diameter of the inside portion of the refill and provide a tighter fit. Two cautions about this. First, make sure the super glue has ample time to dry before putting the handle on the refill. Not allowing the glue to dry first will essentially glue the two pieces together. Second, use a small amount of glue. You can always add later if it was not enough. Too much will prevent the refill from sliding onto the brush handle. By using this method, I have been successfully using generic and much cheaper replacements. The last ones were about a dollar apiece through Amazon instead of about $20 for three. That's a huge savings!
