The Guy at the Bank Who Says "Hi"

Who is that guy at the bank who says “hi” to me when I walk in and doesn’t seem to do anything else? Why do “we” need him? I don’t need someone to say “hi” and tell me which bank teller doesn’t have anyone in front of him/her. Of all the stupid things that is high on the list.
