First Tomato of the Season

The first tomato of the season is a large cherry. I grew all of my tomatoes from seed this year.

Income Disparity may be More than it Seems

After reading an article about the inequality in income between racial groups in Minnesota, I reflected on my own experiences growing up here. I never considered Minnesota to be a racist place and that was the implication of this article. Unfortunately I think this is a surface view of the problem. What I would like to know having been in Minnesota my entire life, is how many of these people have been here long term vs how many moved here from somewhere else to get a better life. Could it be more of an issue of people moving to Minnesota because there is a robust welfare system here? As my wife is from an immigrant family, we are aware of the traps involved in welfare. Once a person starts making money, they are cut off and that fear can keep people from achieving. So can this be dismissed as racism? Or is it a deeper problem within the welfare system? More than likely it is multiple factors. The more people are allowed to help themselves, the more success we will see in equality.

Wear a Mask

Not only do some people not want to wear a mask, but twice now I've had someone ridicule me for wearing one. I guess some people don't care until someone they know is the person who dies. But I think, if this upward trend in covid-19 cases continues, everyone is going to know someone who died sooner or later.

July 15, 2020

Today I received notice that my COVID-19 furlough is turning into a layoff. Then I went grocery shopping, hiked and picked mulberries, and worked on my fence. Then I made fried fish and fresh beans. I also drank a beer that I made in December of 2004.

Better Parenting = Better Kids = Better World

Being a good parent who spends time with your children and teaches them about respect and what is right, moral, just and kind, will do more than demanding that other people change. I answer dozens of questions every day from my son. If I wasn't there to answer him, where would he get his information from? We can't rely on TV, the President, protesters or anyone to value our kids enough to tell them the truth. A better world starts with strong families.

Consideration for School Reopening

Something to consider when talking about reopening schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, is that the Trump thinks it's a good idea. Almost certainly, that means we shouldn't do it...

Goodbye Washington Redskins

So after a long history of resisting, the Washington Redskins are finally considering changing what is probably the most racist team name ever. Sometimes it just takes a while...

All Lives Should Matter

Saying "All Lives Matter," is not racist. It includes everyone. It does not exclude anyone. If you disagree, that is your right. However, advocating for only one race, is by definition, racist. If you still disagree, test this by replacing the word, black with white. Do you still think it sounds okay? Unless we can accept that all lives matter, we cannot achieve racial harmony. Forcing racial equity through exclusion, is divisive. Bottomline is that you can have BLM, but stop attacking people who say that all lives matter.

Strong Ideas

Bad ideas are easily supported by those least affected by them. Critical thinking, the most valuable of all gifts, is most hated by those who don't want to get better. Whining about everything, almost never improves a situation. Change that starts with self is most likely to succeed. Attitude is the key to contentment. Compromise is necessary for growth. Compassion is what shows your strength.

Wife Saving Water Rescue

My wife insists on using the water from the dehumidifier to water plants, so not to waste it. Yet, she has no problem with toilet flushing; especially if a bug is involved.
